The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 438

When Evelyn showed up, Brooks couldn't resist stepping forward and wrapping her in a warm embrace.

"Evelyn, when I come back, could you give me a chance?" he asked, hope lacing his voice.

Was there room for him in her heart too?

"You don't have to answer me right now. Take this week to think it over, and when

I return next week, let me know your decision, okay?"

Brooks wasn't about to pressure her.

The boarding announcement echoed through the airport, urging passengers to start boarding. Brooks held her a bit tighter, reluctant to let go, but eventually, he did.

Evelyn watched as Brooks walked away, glancing back every few steps until he vanished from sight. Only then did she turn to leave.

On the drive back, she picked up Adam and accompanied him to the donor center to sign the voluntary donation agreement.

At the center, the staff greeted them warmly and showed them in.

Once seated, they handed the agreement to Adam. "Adam, please take a look."

Adam took the document, reviewing it with Evelyn by his side.

Before he signed, Evelyn paused to remind him, "Adam, once you sign this agreement, the hospital will start prepping for the recipient's surgery."

"If you change your mind after the process starts, you'll face legal consequences."

"Make sure you're sure before you sign."

Adam had thought it through; he wasn't planning to back out.

Still, he asked, "Can I know the recipient's name?"

His kidney would be part of someone else's life.

Even without a blood tie, it felt like a bond.

He thought if they ever needed help, he could offer some support.

"Adam, I'm sorry, but our policy is that donors and recipients remain anonymous to each other."

"Alright."

Adam didn't waste any more time, picked up the pen, and was about to sign.

Adam paused, pen hovering above the paper.

He and Evelyn turned to see Charles at the door.

Both of them frowned, clearly unamused.

Charles's gaze lingered on Evelyn.

Evelyn, uninterested, directed her attention elsewhere.

Adam felt similarly.

It was as if Charles just had a knack for bad timing.

Adam picked up the pen again, ready to sign and leave with Evelyn.

But Charles grabbed his hand.

"Charles, what do you want?" Evelyn's voice was ice-cold.

Charles spoke softly, "Hear mea

The staff, having received a call, exited the room, leaving the three alone. Charles pressed his lips together, then revealed, "The recipient is Sandy." Last night, he had gone home, pondering over everything.

He knew why Adam, an athlete, was at the donor center-it was for Charlie.

Because of that, he couldn't hide the truth anymore. Ultimately, he decided to tell Evelyn.

He didn't want Evelyn to unknowingly let Adam donate his kidney.
