Chapter 568 Witnessing the Execution (Part 1)
"Laura, I'm getting old. Everything I have is meant for Nat and the others," Federrick said with a chuckle. "I won't be taking you in as my daughter. That brat, Marcus, is rich enough. You don't need to be thinking about my inheritance."noveldrama
Laura froze for a moment, then quickly shook her head. "Mr. Langton, that's not what I meant. Wesley gave me plenty of money. I don't need yours.
"If anything, I'd rather give all my money to you, Nat, and the others.
"It's just..." Her voice choked up. "I don't have parents. I just wanted more family."
"No worries. I understand," Federrick said with a smile. "I was only joking. You don't have to treat me as your father. Consider The Herbalist's Sanctuary your home. I've taken in a lot of kids over the years, but I've never thought of any of them as my own children. They're just my little apprentices."
"Then... can I be your apprentice too?" Tears welled up in Laura's eyes. "Mr. Langton, you gave me a second chance at life. I really want to repay you."
"Laura, I don't see you as an outsider, and that's why I'm speaking honestly. You've already lost too much time in the first half of your life. From now on, you need to live for yourself.
"Don't waste your time feeling like you owe me just because I saved you.
"Besides, Marcus paid a hefty price for me to save you. Being grateful is a good thing, but there's no need to overdo it. Do you understand what I mean?"
Laura nodded through her tears. "I understand, Mr. Langton."
"Good. Now, go and live your life freely.
"Oh, by the way, Nat and Marcus are in Amberton right now, staying at Four Horizons Hotel. If you want to head back to Dithoria City, have Connie take you. But if you feel like exploring the city for a bit, go ahead and have some fun before heading back."
Laura thought for a moment, then nodded. "I think I'll go to the city center first and meet up with Marcus and Nat."
"Alright, then pack your things and head out early. Otherwise, you'll miss them."
Federrick stood up and turned to Connie. "Connie, I'm trusting you with this." "Yes, Mr. Langton. I got it.
"Laura, let's get ready and head out," Connie said.
"Alright."
After packing up, Laura and Connie got in the car and set off for the city center in Amberton.
As the scenery outside the window blurred past them, Laura felt a rare sense of ease. It had been so long since she had taken a trip like this without worry.
The breeze smelled fresh, and the sights along the way were beautiful.
The Herbalist's Sanctuary was quite far from the city, so Connie drove for several hours before finally reaching the city.
"Laura, let's go straight to the hotel and find Nat and Mr. Holden. Then, we can grab dinner there. How does that sound?"
"I don't mind," Laura replied softly. "That sounds fine."
"Alright, then straight to the hotel it is."
Connie was familiar with Amberton and didn't need to use the navigation system. Soon, she pulled up to the entrance of Four Horizons Hotel.
After parking, she sent a message to Natalie.
Connie: Dr. Elim, I've brought Laura to your hotel. Are you guys here, or are you out handling business?
Natalie didn't respond right away.
"Laura, let's eat first," Connie suggested.
"Okay." Laura hadn't been outside in a long time. Though she wasn't socially anxious, her illness had left a deep psychological impact. Every time she saw a mirror or a reflective surface, a wave of fear washed over her. sŵnovel
Luckily, with Connie by her side, she was slowly overcoming it.
After checking in, they headed to the hotel's restaurant. They overheard a conversation from the table next to them as they ate.
"Have you heard? The Langley family, who used to be the richest in our city, actually built their fortune through shady means. Grace is dead, but her brother, Kenton, got the death sentence."
"Wasn't Kenton the director of that
hospital? I heard he used his
position to traffic newborn babies Remember how everyone thought
Natalie was a fake heiress? Well, the real heiress, Selena, was actually sold off by her own uncle."
"Damn, that's some next-level evil. Makes me wanna thank my uncle for not selling me off."
"No kidding. But apparently, Kenton wasn't even the worst of them. There was a bigger monster behind him. Some woman forced him into selling babies.
"And her daughter is just as bad. They ran their operations out of Scarlet Hill."
"Scarlet Hill? That place is gorgeous! I can't believe it was a hub for human trafficking. I'm never going there again."
"Have you heard of Yvette Jenkins? She was the golden daughter of the Jenkins family in Dithoria City decades ago. When her sister burned the residence to the ground, she disappeared. It turns out she's been hiding in the shadows, doing all kinds of heinous things."Content
"Yvette's a total psycho. Instead of rebuilding the residence the right way, used dirty money to destroy lives."
she
"Imagine how many families were torn apart because of her."
"That's why the authorities are making an example out of them. They're going to publicly execute them, and people can come watch. You can even throw rotten eggs and stinky socks at them before they're shot."
"There's a whole setup for it. And if you watch, they'll even give you 30 fresh eggs as a reward."
"The reward doesn't matter. I just want to throw an egg at her face."
"Me too."
"Let's go together, then!"
"There'll be live streams too. I bet their ancestors would be rolling in their graves." "Graves? Hah! Their graves were dug up by stray dogs ages ago. Even if they wanted to roll over, they'd have to find their coffins first."
"You're right. Cheers to that!"
Laura didn't know much about the situation, but Connie had been following the news closely. She filled Laura in on all the details in a soft voice.
The moment Laura heard that Natalie had been swapped at birth in that very hospital, her face darkened. "Connie, I want to watch the execution. I want to see them get shot."
"Me too." Connie clenched her jaw. "Laura, Cassie was corrupted by Yvette. And Charles took his own life because of her."
"We have to be there. And we're throwing those rotten eggs and socks ourselves." "Absolutely." Laura's hands curled into fists as her face was filled with hatred. They quickly finished their meal and returned to their rooms to rest.
Yvette and the others were scheduled to be executed in a few days. Until then, they would stay at the hotel and wait.
